Timeline

A. March – July: Database

  1. Gather primary texts: From the periodical archives and databases listed in our project’s “Sources,” we will compile a core body of texts, primarily relevant newspaper articles and related photographs, that will later be organized into our concordance and image composites.
  2. Compose database: Texts will be organized in a database where they will be organized and tagged with appropriate metadata (bibliographic information, keyword, etc.).

B. July 18 – August 12:  Tools

  1. Concordance: With the assistance of collaborators at the Vectors-CTS Institute, we will build a concordance of the material gathered in the previous months.  The goal is that this concordance will become the searchable and navigable source for our website.
  2. Compositor program: Images culled from newspapers will be used to form the foundation of a composite program that will ultimately produce the images accompanying the “digital passports” that will be constructed and assigned to each “maligned user.”
  3. Documenteur program: Ideally, our goal is to write and implement algorithmic code that can produce “documentation” for users based on the activity of users as they search through the digital concordance of periodical texts.
  4. Design/Integration into a site: Following feedback solicited from fellows at the institute and users from our home institutions, we will combine the concordance, compositor program, and documenteur program in a single site where users build a “digital passport” through movement. We envision the resulting “digital passport” to resemble, in some ways, a social networking profile page that identifies the user. However, this profile will be be unstable and shifting and based on the users changing actions as s/he tries to gain access to material that will become more and more difficult to access.

C. August: Launch

We will launch a beta version of the site.
